Major Service

Major Service for Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Cupra

A major service is the most comprehensive scheduled service we offer at VWG Specialists. It covers everything in an interim service, then goes further: every serviceable filter, spark plugs where they are due, and a thorough inspection of the brakes, suspension, steering and driveline. We follow the Volkswagen Group schedule for your exact model and engine code, so nothing on the manufacturer checklist is skipped and nothing is fitted before it is actually due.
Because we are an independent VW Group specialist, you get dealer-level work without dealer overheads. We run ODIS, the same diagnostic platform franchised dealers use, we fit genuine or OEM-quality parts, and we update your digital service record when the work is done. Your manufacturer warranty stays intact, and your service history stays worth something when you come to sell the car.

What a Major Service Includes

Engine oil and filter

Fully synthetic oil to the exact VW Group specification for your engine, such as VW 504 00 or 507 00, with a genuine oil filter and a new sump plug washer.

Air filter replacement

A clogged air filter restricts airflow and can upset MAF readings and fuelling. We replace it as standard on every major service rather than just inspecting it and moving on.

Pollen and cabin filter

Replaced to keep the ventilation system flowing properly. A blocked pollen filter causes misted windows, weak airflow and stale smells, and it makes the air conditioning work harder than it should.

Fuel filter on diesels

On TDI engines we replace the fuel filter at the scheduled interval. A restricted filter starves the high-pressure pump and injectors, which are expensive components to lose to dirty fuel.

Spark plugs where due

On petrol engines we fit genuine or OE-specification plugs at the mileage the schedule calls for. Worn plugs cause misfires, poor economy and unnecessary strain on the ignition coils.

Full ODIS diagnostic scan

Every control module on the car is scanned with the same platform VW dealers use. Stored fault codes are read, investigated and cleared where appropriate, not just wiped and ignored.

Brakes, suspension and driveline inspection

Pads, discs, lines, bushes, ball joints, driveshaft boots and exhaust are all checked and measured. Anything wearing is reported with photos so you can plan work before it becomes urgent.

Digital service record update

We stamp your online service history through the official Volkswagen Group system, so the car shows a complete, verifiable record for warranty and resale purposes.

Fault Codes We Often Find During a Major Service

A major service includes a full-system diagnostic scan, and on cars that have missed services we regularly find stored codes pointing at neglected maintenance. These are the ones we see most often, and what they usually mean on VW Group engines.

P052B

Cold Start Camshaft Timing Over-Retarded, Bank 1. Cam timing drifting on cold start is an early hint of chain or tensioner wear on EA888 engines. Caught at a major service it is a planned repair rather than a breakdown.

P0100

Mass Air Flow Sensor Circuit. An intermittent MAF circuit fault that many owners never notice beyond slightly lazy throttle response. The full scan at a major service picks up stored events like this before they strand the car.

P0133

Oxygen Sensor Slow Response, Bank 1 Sensor 1. Lambda sensors age gradually and drag fuel economy down long before a warning light. A slow-response code stored at service time usually pays for the sensor in fuel within the year.

P0327

Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Low Input. A quiet failure: with the knock sensor circuit down the ECU runs conservative ignition timing, costing performance and economy. It stores a code without always lighting the dash, so scans at service matter.

P0411

Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow. The secondary air pump and combi valves seize with age on many VAG petrol engines and become an MOT emissions failure. We catch the stored code at service and free or replace the valve in good time.

P0420

Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold. Sometimes a genuinely tired catalytic converter, but often the knock-on effect of long-term misfires or oil consumption. We diagnose the cause before condemning the cat.

00562

Oil Level/Temperature Sensor (G266): Implausible Signal. The sump-mounted sensor that drives the oil warnings and flexible service maths. A faulty G266 means the car cannot warn you about low oil, so we test it whenever it appears in a scan.

P2015 / 008213

Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor, Bank 1. A very common VAG code on 2.0 TDI engines where the manifold flap linkage wears. Repair flap kits or a replacement manifold are the usual fix.

These are well-documented weak points across the VW Group range. The inspection element of a major service exists to find them while they are still cheap to put right.

Frequently Asked Questions

An interim service covers oil, the oil filter and essential safety checks. A major service adds the air filter, pollen filter, fuel filter on diesels, spark plugs where they are due, and a much deeper inspection of the brakes, suspension and driveline, plus a full diagnostic scan. If the car only ever gets one type of service, it should be the major, because it is the only one that covers every serviceable item.

For most VW Group cars on fixed servicing, a major service falls every two years, alternating with a smaller service in between. The exact schedule depends on your model, engine code and year, and some items such as spark plugs run on their own longer intervals. We always work from the manufacturer schedule for your specific car rather than applying a generic menu.

No. Under UK block exemption rules your manufacturer warranty remains valid as long as the car is serviced to the VW Group schedule using parts of matching quality. We use genuine or OEM parts, follow the official schedule item by item and record everything we do, so there is nothing for a dealer to push back on if you ever make a claim.

Yes. Volkswagen Group replaced paper service books with a digital service record held on their central system. As a specialist we have access to it, and we stamp the record once the work is complete. That means your service history is visible to any dealer or future buyer who checks the car, exactly as it would be after a dealer service.

It varies by engine. Many TSI and TFSI petrol engines call for plugs around every 40,000 miles, with some engines due sooner, while diesel fuel filters typically run to a similar interval. We work from the schedule for your exact engine code, and if an item is not yet due we will tell you rather than fitting it early and charging you for it.

Engine size and oil capacity, whether spark plugs or a fuel filter fall due at this visit, and whether the schedule calls for extras such as a Haldex service at the same time. We confirm what your car actually needs from the manufacturer schedule before any work starts, give you a clear quote, and nothing extra is fitted without your approval.

Yes. We service Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Cupra every day, and we also look after Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini using the appropriate dealer-level diagnostic platforms. The mainstream brands share engines, gearboxes and service schedules across the group, so the same specialist knowledge and tooling applies whichever badge is on the nose.
