Every three years or around 40,000 miles, whichever comes first. On generations with a filter, the filter is replaced at the same time. On Generation 5 units we also recommend a pump strainer clean, because there is no filter to catch clutch debris and the strainer blocks instead. Cars that are driven hard, launched regularly or used for towing benefit from shorter intervals.
The oil degrades and fills with fine clutch debris, which collects on the pump pickup strainer. Starved of oil, the pump cannot build pressure, so the clutch never clamps and the car runs front-wheel drive only. Left longer, the pump burns out and the clutch pack glazes. What began as an inexpensive oil change becomes a pump, and eventually a coupling, which is a far bigger bill.
The most common is wheelspin from the front wheels in situations where the car used to grip, especially pulling away on wet roads or accelerating out of junctions. You may see a traction or four-wheel drive warning light, though often only intermittently. Some owners notice nothing until winter arrives and the car behaves like a front-wheel drive. A humming or groaning pump behind the rear axle is another late-stage sign.
Usually yes, in the short term. The car defaults safely to front-wheel drive, so it remains driveable. The risks are reduced grip in poor conditions, and the possibility that a cheap cause, such as a blocked strainer, progresses into pump or clutch damage the longer it is left. We would advise booking it in promptly rather than waiting for the warning light to become permanent.
That is exactly what our diagnosis establishes before you spend money. We test pump current draw and pressure response with the diagnostic tools, inspect the strainer, and check for stored faults. Many cars that arrive with a suspected failed pump leave with a service and a cleaned strainer. Where the pump genuinely has failed we will show you the evidence, and the coupling itself is rarely the guilty party.
As a rule of thumb, transverse-engined cars use Haldex: Golf R and 4Motion Golfs, transverse Audi A3, S3, TT and Q3, Tiguan, and their SEAT, Cupra and Skoda equivalents. Longitudinal Audi models such as the A4, A5, A6 and Q5 traditionally use a centre differential instead, which is serviced differently. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which system your car has before booking.
No. We service Haldex units using genuine fluid and filters, follow the VW Group procedure including the required diagnostic steps, and provide full documentation. UK rules allow independent specialists to carry out scheduled maintenance without affecting the manufacturer warranty when approved parts and procedures are used. Your service record stays complete and your warranty stays intact.
