| PD tandem pump | 1.9/2.0 TDI PD engines | Body seal leaks | Hard hot starting, diesel leak | Replace tandem pump |
| In-tank lift pump | All direct injection models | Weak delivery starves HPFP | P0087 under load only | Replace lift pump, not HPFP |
You usually cannot tell from the driver's seat, because a weak in-tank lift pump starves the high pressure pump and produces identical symptoms. We test delivery volume and pressure from the tank first, then log rail pressure under load. That sequence tells us which pump is failing, and it regularly saves customers the cost of the wrong one.
On the EA113 engine the high pressure pump is driven off the camshaft through a small bucket-style follower. The follower's hardened face wears through, and once it does the pump piston runs directly on the cam lobe and destroys it. Symptoms are P2293, low rail pressure and power loss at high rpm. Periodic follower inspection is cheap insurance on these engines and we recommend it at service time.
On a petrol engine you may get away with hesitation and reduced power for a while, but the engine can lean out under load, which risks real damage. On a CP4-equipped diesel we advise stopping promptly, because a disintegrating pump sends metal through the entire fuel system and turns a pump replacement into a far bigger job. Get it diagnosed before it decides for you.
When a CP4 pump fails it typically sheds fine metal debris into the fuel. That debris travels to the filter, lines, rail, pressure valves and injectors. If the system is not properly cleaned or the affected parts replaced, the debris destroys the new pump within a short time. The full-system work is what makes these repairs substantial, and it is also what makes them last.
This page covers like-for-like replacement of failed pumps with genuine or OEM parts. If your car is tuned and needs more fuelling headroom than the standard pump can provide, that is a different conversation, and our HPFP upgrades page covers the uprated options we supply and fit for stage 2 and beyond.
Volkswagen Group high pressure pumps do not normally require coding in the way injectors do. After fitting we reset the relevant adaptation values, bleed and prime the system, and then log rail pressure on a road test so the ECU relearns its fuel trims with the new pump in place. The car should drive correctly straight away.
On diesels the common culprits are fuel contamination, water in the fuel and repeatedly running the tank very low, since diesel itself lubricates the pump. On cam-driven petrol pumps, stretched oil change intervals accelerate follower and lobe wear. Poor quality fuel and pattern-part filters play a part too. Good servicing habits prevent most of it.
