DSG Mechatronics Repairs

DSG Mechatronics Repairs for Volkswagen, Audi, PORSCHE, SEAT & CUPRA

At VWG Specialists we specialise in DSG and S tronic mechatronic repairs for Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and CUPRA. The mechatronic unit is the electro-hydraulic brain of your DSG gearbox, controlling clutch engagement, gear selection and shift pressure. When it starts to fail you will often notice jerky changes, hesitation, slipping or gearbox limp mode. Our technicians use genuine ODIS dealer software and VCDS to diagnose, repair, rebuild or replace mechatronic units on DQ200, DQ250, DQ500 and DL501 gearboxes, restoring smooth and reliable shifting.

Mechatronic Unit Diagnostics

Dealer level ODIS and VCDS fault reading, live data and pressure testing to pinpoint the exact mechatronic fault before any work begins.

Genuine DSG oil and filter service, essential after any mechatronic repair to protect the new components.

DSG & S tronic Fault Codes We Diagnose and Repair

Seeing a gearbox warning or a fault code on your VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda or CUPRA? Below are common DSG and S tronic mechatronic fault codes we diagnose and repair across the DQ200, DQ250, DQ381, DQ500 and DL501 gearboxes. If your code is not listed, get in touch, the chances are we can still help.

P1735

Clutch 1 position / pressure sensor electrical fault. Causes a sudden loss of the odd gears (1, 3, 5 & 7) and forces the gearbox into limp mode. Common on the DQ381 and DQ500 7 speed, including the 2017 VW Tiguan.

P1736

Clutch 2 position / pressure sensor electrical fault. Causes a sudden loss of the even gears (2, 4 & 6) and forces the gearbox into limp mode. Common on the DQ381 and DQ500 7 speed, including the 2017 VW Tiguan.

P1738

Clutch position / shift time error, usually stored with P1735 and P1736 on a failing DQ381 or DQ500 mechatronic and often triggering limp mode.

P17BF

Hydraulic pump overload protection. The pump runs but pressure is not built or held, so the mechatronic protects the pump. Classic DQ200 7 speed fault.

P189C

Function restriction due to insufficient pressure build up. Low hydraulic pressure, usually a mechatronic or valve body fault on the DQ200.

P179C

Main pressure valve, electrical malfunction within the mechatronic unit.

P179D

Oil cooling valve, electrical malfunction within the mechatronic unit.

P0840 / P0841

Transmission hydraulic pressure sensor fault or implausible signal.

P175D

Clutch 1 opens unintentionally, a mechatronic clutch control fault.

P175E

Clutch 1 closes unintentionally, a mechatronic clutch control fault.

P176E

Clutch 2 opens unintentionally, a mechatronic clutch control fault.

P176F

Clutch 2 closes unintentionally, a mechatronic clutch control fault.

P2716

Pressure control valve 4, electrical fault inside the mechatronic.

P173E / P173F

Solenoid valve electrical malfunction, gearbox part 1.

P174A / P174C / P174D / P174E

Solenoid valve electrical malfunctions in gearbox parts 1 and 2.

P0962 - P0973

Pressure control solenoid electrical fault, range or performance.

P176A - P176D

Gear selector 1 to 4 cannot be regulated by the mechatronic.

P0730

Incorrect gear ratio detected by the transmission control unit.

P0731 - P0736

Incorrect gear ratio, gears 1 to 6.

P0715

Transmission input speed sensor 1 fault.

P2765

Transmission input speed sensor 2 fault.

P0607

Control module performance fault / implausible mechatronic readings.

P1604

Transmission control unit malfunction.

P0562

System / charging voltage too low for the gearbox to operate correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is the electro-hydraulic control module inside your DSG gearbox, combining the valve body, solenoids, sensors and transmission control unit that manage clutch engagement and gear changes.

Jerky or harsh gear changes, hesitation pulling away, slipping, loss of drive, a flashing gear display and gearbox limp mode are all common symptoms.

In many cases we can repair or rebuild the unit by replacing the faulty solenoids, sensors or valve body, which is far more cost effective than a full replacement. We advise after diagnostics.

We work on all common VW Group DSG and S tronic boxes including the 7 speed DQ200, 6 speed DQ250, DQ500 and DL501 S tronic units.

Yes. A genuine DSG oil and filter service is essential after any mechatronic work to protect the new components and ensure smooth operation.

Most mechatronic repairs are completed within one to two days depending on parts availability and whether a repair or full replacement is needed.

Yes. These are clutch position sensor and shift faults on the 7 speed DQ381 mechatronic unit. P1735 affects the odd gears (1, 3, 5 and 7) and P1736 the even gears (2, 4 and 6). We repair the mechatronic unit rather than replacing the whole gearbox, which saves you a lot of money.

Both point to a hydraulic pressure problem in the DQ200 7 speed mechatronic. P17BF is the hydraulic pump overload protection and P189C means the unit cannot build enough pressure. We diagnose the cause and repair the mechatronic to clear them.

We do not recommend it. Driving with codes such as P17BF, P189C or a clutch fault can cause further damage to the mechatronic and clutches. Get it diagnosed as soon as possible to avoid a bigger bill.

Yes. Our DSG and mechatronic repairs are carried out with quality parts and come with a warranty. Contact us for full details.

It depends on the gearbox and the exact fault, but a mechatronic repair is usually far cheaper than a full gearbox replacement. Send us your fault codes and vehicle details for a quote.

Limp mode is the gearbox protecting itself. On 2017 era Tiguans fitted with the 7 speed DQ381 or DQ500 DSG it is often caused by clutch position or pressure sensor faults inside the mechatronic unit, stored as codes such as P1735, P1736 and P1738. You can suddenly lose either the odd gears (1, 3, 5 and 7) or the even gears (2, 4 and 6). We diagnose and repair the mechatronic to get you out of limp mode.

A 2017 Tiguan is usually fitted with the 7 speed DQ381 or DQ500 DSG. Both are boxes we repair. Mechatronic clutch position and pressure sensor faults are common on them and we can usually repair the unit rather than replace the whole gearbox, saving you money.

The mechatronic controls each of the two clutches separately. When the position or pressure sensor for one clutch fails you lose the gears that clutch operates, either the odd gears (1, 3, 5, 7) or the even gears (2, 4, 6), and the gearbox drops into limp mode. It is a classic mechatronic fault that we repair.
