Sealed for life means sealed for the life the manufacturer planned, which is often the warranty period plus a margin. The oil still degrades. When we drain a so-called lifetime fill at 80,000 miles it is usually dark, smells burnt and carries visible wear metal. If you plan to keep the car beyond 100,000 miles, changing the oil is one of the cheapest ways to help the gearbox get there.
More than most, yes. The Aisin-built 09G six-speed fitted to many transverse models runs its fluid hot in town traffic, and tired ATF is behind much of the lock-up shudder and shift flare we diagnose on these units. We advise a fluid and filter change around every 40,000 miles using the correct Aisin-specification ATF, with the level set through the temperature-controlled procedure. It is a modest job that spares the valve body a hard life.
On manuals, listen for bearing whine and feel for notchy or baulky changes when cold. On automatics, watch for flared shifts, a shudder around 40 to 50 mph as the torque converter locks, delayed engagement from Park and any burnt smell from the fluid. None of these guarantee the oil is the cause, but all of them justify getting the level and condition checked before bigger damage follows.
Yes, and quickly. Friction modifiers in ATF are matched to the clutch materials, so the wrong fluid changes shift feel and can glaze or burn clutch packs. Manual boxes with brass synchros need the correct gear oil chemistry to avoid synchro wear. This is why we fill strictly to the VW Group or ZF specification for your gearbox code rather than using a universal fluid.
Three things drive the price: the quantity and specification of oil, whether the unit has a serviceable filter and sump gasket, and how involved the fill procedure is. A manual box takes around two litres of gear oil, while a ZF automatic needs several litres of LifeguardFluid plus a pan and integrated filter. We confirm the exact requirement for your gearbox code before you book.
Often it helps, sometimes it does not. Fresh oil restores the friction behaviour synchros rely on, so mild notchiness and cold-shift baulking frequently improve. If a synchro ring is genuinely worn, oil will soften the symptom but not cure it. We road test before the change and tell you honestly whether what we feel is oil-related or the early sign of a mechanical repair.
Yes. The ZF 8HP fitted to longitudinal Audi models is officially lifetime filled, but ZF itself supports fluid changes at sensible mileage, and we follow the full procedure: new pan with integrated filter where applicable, genuine LifeguardFluid 8, and the level set at the specified temperature with the correct diagnostic equipment. It is one of the most worthwhile preventative jobs on a higher-mileage Audi.
