| Fault | Common gearboxes | Typical symptom | Overhaul fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Worn 2nd gear synchro | 02M / 02Q 6-speed | Crunch into 2nd when cold | New synchro rings and hubs |
| Input shaft bearing wear | 02M / 02Q, high mileage | Rattle in neutral, quiet clutch down | Bearing kit during rebuild |
| Diff and pinion bearing wear | 02Q on high-torque TDIs | Droning whine rising with speed | Differential bearing replacement |
| Differential pin wear | 02J 5-speed, tuned cars | Clunk on load change | Diff rebuild or uprated diff |
| Worn selector forks | High-mileage 5 and 6-speeds | Jumps out of gear | New forks and sliders |
| Gear tooth pitting | Hard-used and tuned boxes | Rumble under load in one gear | Gear pair replacement |
| Crunch into reverse | Most VAG manuals | Graunch engaging reverse | Clutch drag check first |
A crunch into second, especially when cold, is the classic sign of worn synchromesh. The synchro ring can no longer match shaft speeds before the gear engages, so the teeth clash. It will not fix itself and it slowly damages the engagement teeth, which turns a synchro job into a gear replacement job. Caught early, an overhaul is far cheaper, so have it assessed rather than learning to shift around it.
For a short time, usually yes, but the whine is a bearing telling you it is breaking up. As the bearing deteriorates it releases metal into the oil, which then wears the gears and remaining bearings, and shaft alignment suffers. A box caught at the whining stage often needs only bearings and seals. Left for months, it can need gears and a differential too, so get it inspected promptly.
In most cases, yes. A used gearbox is the same age and design as yours with no service history you can verify, and the labour to fit it is much the same as the labour to refit your own rebuilt unit. An overhaul gives you a box with new bearings, synchros and seals and a known condition. We will give you an honest comparison for your car either way.
It depends entirely on what the strip-down reveals. A box that needs synchros, bearings and seals sits at one level, while one that also needs gears or differential parts costs more. Whether the clutch and dual-mass flywheel are replaced while the box is out also matters. We inspect and diagnose first, then quote for the actual work before anything is committed, so there are no surprises.
If it is part-worn, almost always. Removing the gearbox accounts for most of the labour in a clutch job, so replacing a half-worn clutch, release bearing and, where needed, the dual-mass flywheel while the box is already out avoids paying that labour twice. We inspect these parts during every overhaul and only recommend replacement when the measured wear justifies it.
The 02M and 02Q six-speeds are strong gearboxes, but at higher mileages, and particularly behind torquey TDI and tuned petrol engines, their shaft and differential bearings wear and start to drone or whine with road speed. Caught early, the fix is a bearing overhaul rather than gears. It is one of the most common rebuilds we carry out on VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda models.
No. We rebuild gearboxes using genuine and OEM parts and the correct VW Group specification oil, and the work is documented properly on your service record. Under UK block exemption rules an independent specialist can carry out repairs without invalidating the manufacturer warranty, provided correct parts and procedures are used, which is exactly how we work.
