| Service check | What we do | Warning sign if left | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gearbox oil | Drain, inspect, refill to spec | Notchy shifts when cold | Slows synchro and bearing wear |
| Clutch hydraulics | Fluid check and bleed | Soft or sinking pedal | Prevents dragging clutch damage |
| Clutch wear | Biting point and slip test | High biting point | Plan replacement before failure |
| Gear linkage | Cable adjustment and lubrication | Vague or stiff selection | Restores accurate gear selection |
| Gearbox mounts | Load test on road | Clunks on take-off | Protects driveshafts and linkage |
| Oil leaks | Driveshaft and selector seals | Drips, falling oil level | Low oil ruins bearings |
| Clutch pedal switch | Operation and code check | Stop-start or cruise faults | Cheap fix, avoids misdiagnosis |
Officially, most VW Group manual gearboxes have a lifetime fill with no scheduled change. In practice the oil still shears, oxidises and fills with fine metal over tens of thousands of miles, and in our experience boxes that get fresh oil shift better and wear more slowly. Lifetime, in this context, tends to mean the life of the warranty rather than the life of the car.
There is no factory interval on most models, so this is our recommendation rather than a VW schedule. For a normally driven car we suggest a change at around 60,000 miles, and sooner for tuned engines, towing, track use or predominantly urban driving. If the oil that comes out is dark and glittery, that is the gearbox telling you the change was due.
Not necessarily. Notchy or vague shifting is more often tired oil, a stretched or misadjusted cable linkage, worn shifter bushes or soft mounts than genuine internal wear. A service addresses all of those first, which is far cheaper than assuming the worst. If we find true synchro crunch or bearing noise underneath, we will tell you plainly and talk you through overhaul options.
On manual cars the usual culprits are the clutch pedal switch or clutch position sensor, which log codes such as P0704, P0830 or P0807. The car then refuses to engage cruise or restart the engine automatically. These are quick diagnoses with ODIS or VCDS and usually inexpensive repairs, and we check the whole circuit rather than replacing parts on guesswork.
A high biting point on a cable or hydraulic clutch is the traditional sign of a worn friction plate, though some self-adjusting clutches hide wear until late. During a service we test for slip under load in a high gear, which gives a much better picture than pedal feel alone. If the clutch is on its way out, planning the job beats being recovered.
Servicing covers everything that keeps a healthy gearbox healthy: fresh oil, clutch and linkage adjustment, hydraulics, mounts and seals. The moment we find evidence of damage inside the box itself, such as genuine synchro crunch, bearing whine or metal debris in the drained oil, you are into overhaul territory. The two dovetail deliberately: the service is where internal wear gets caught early, and our manual gearbox overhauls page explains what happens next if it is.
It varies by gearbox code, and it matters. VW Group specifies different fluids across its five and six-speed manual boxes, and the wrong viscosity or specification can make cold shifting worse and accelerate synchro wear. We identify your exact gearbox code from the car and use the parts system to match the correct specification fluid, rather than a one-size-fits-all gear oil.
