PIWIS Porsche Diagnostics

PIWIS Diagnostics for Porsche 911, Cayman, Boxster, Macan, Cayenne, Panamera and Taycan

At VWG Specialists we run the PIWIS tester, the same diagnostic platform Porsche Centres use. That means genuine guided fault finding, access to every control module, live data, actuations and coding on your Porsche, not a generic code reader guessing at symptoms. Whether your 911 has an intermittent misfire, your Macan is in limp mode or your Cayenne is sitting low on its air suspension, we can diagnose the fault properly and fix it with genuine or OEM parts.
PIWIS matters because a modern Porsche stores faults across dozens of networked control units, and many of them never appear on a standard OBD scan. With dealer-level access we can read PDK gearbox faults, PSM stability system codes, level control data and Taycan systems, run the same guided test plans a Porsche technician would follow, and check the VIN for open campaigns and service actions before we start any work.

What Our Porsche Diagnostic Service Includes

Full-system PIWIS scan

Every control unit on the car is interrogated, not just the engine. We record all stored and sporadic faults with freeze-frame data before anything is cleared.

Guided fault finding

PIWIS test plans walk through the same measurements and actuations a Porsche Centre uses, so faults are proven with evidence rather than fixed by swapping parts.

PDK and Tiptronic diagnostics

Gearbox fault memory, clutch adaptation values and temperature data read directly from the transmission control unit, with a road test to confirm shift behaviour.

Air suspension and level control

Compressor run times, level sensor values and pressure readings for Cayenne, Panamera and Macan, plus ride height calibration after any suspension repair.

PSM, ABS and chassis systems

Wheel speed sensor data, steering angle and brake system faults diagnosed and recalibrated, so PSM failure warnings are cleared properly rather than temporarily.

Campaign and recall checks

We check the VIN for outstanding workshop campaigns and service actions, so you know if Porsche should be putting something right at their cost.

Coding and calibrations

Module coding after component replacement, component protection handling, steering angle and level sensor calibrations, and service resets carried out to factory procedure.

Written diagnostic report

You get a clear explanation of what we found, what it means and what the fix involves, with the evidence recorded before any repair is authorised.

Common Porsche Fault Codes We Diagnose

These are the codes we see most often on Porsche models in our workshop. If your scanner or dashboard is showing one of them, this is what it usually means.

P0316

Misfire Detected on Start-Up (First 1000 Revolutions). A cold-start misfire flag common on flat-six engines with tired coils or plugs. PIWIS shows which cylinder logged the event so we replace only what is actually failing.

P0410

Secondary air injection system malfunction. Classic cold start fault on the 996 and first generation Cayenne. Blocked air passages, a failed pump or a stuck change-over valve are the usual causes.

P0491 / P0492

Secondary air system, insufficient flow bank 1 or 2. Often accompanies P0410. We test the pump and valves with PIWIS actuations before condemning any parts.

P1128 / P1130

Fuel trim adaptation lean, bank 1 or 2. Well documented on the 996 and Boxster. A tired mass air flow sensor, an intake air leak or a failing air-oil separator leans the mixture under load.

P0741

Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance. On Tiptronic Cayennes and Panameras this points to converter lock-up shudder or a valve issue. PIWIS guided tests separate a converter fault from a fluid or solenoid cause before any gearbox work is quoted.

P0234

Turbocharger Overboost Condition. Boost has exceeded target, which on a 911 Turbo or Macan usually means a sticking wastegate actuator or a control fault. We log requested against actual boost through PIWIS to find the moment it runs away.

P0456

Evaporative emissions system, small leak. Frequently just a fuel filler cap that is not sealing, but PIWIS lets us run the tank leak test and locate the actual leak point.

P0507

Idle speed higher than expected. Usually a dirty or faulty throttle body or an unmetered air leak. The throttle body needs re-adaptation after cleaning or replacement.

P0335

Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit. A failing crank sensor causes hot-start refusal and intermittent cutting out on 996 and 997 models. It is a known age-related failure and a quick confirmation with live data in PIWIS.

P0700

Transmission control system fault. A gateway code telling you the PDK or Tiptronic control unit has stored its own faults. A full transmission read via PIWIS identifies the real cause.

P2096

Post catalyst fuel trim too lean, bank 1. Often an exhaust leak ahead of the rear oxygen sensor or a lazy sensor. We check live sensor data before anyone condemns a catalytic converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

A generic reader only sees the engine's OBD data. A modern Porsche has dozens of control units for the gearbox, chassis, suspension and body, and most of their faults never appear on a basic scan. PIWIS reads every module, follows the same guided test plans a Porsche Centre uses and lets us code and calibrate components after repair. That is the difference between finding a fault and guessing at it.

Yes. When your car is with us we check the VIN for open workshop campaigns and service actions. If we find one that Porsche should be carrying out at their cost, we tell you before doing any related work, so you are not paying for something the factory would put right.

No. With PIWIS we can read the transmission control unit directly, check clutch adaptation values, temperatures and stored faults, and road test the car to confirm what is happening. Many PDK complaints trace back to causes far cheaper than a replacement gearbox, so a proper diagnosis first is always worth it.

It depends on the light. A flashing check engine light means active misfires that can damage the catalytic converters, so stop driving and call us. A PSM or suspension warning usually means the system has switched off its assistance rather than an immediate danger, but stability and braking behaviour are affected. If the car is in limp mode or showing a red warning, have it recovered rather than driven.

Time. A fault that shows up on the first scan with clear evidence is quick to confirm. An intermittent electrical fault that only appears on the road, or a fault buried behind several unrelated stored codes, takes longer to prove. We agree the diagnostic approach with you first and report back before any repair work is authorised.

Yes. PIWIS gives us access to Taycan control systems in the same way as the rest of the range. Faults involving high-voltage components need particular care, so tell us the symptoms when you book and we will advise on the right approach for your car, including whether it is sensible to drive it to us.

For the manufacturer's new car warranty, no. You are free to have diagnosis and repair work done outside the dealer network provided factory procedures and appropriate parts are used, which is exactly how we work, and we record everything so your history stands up to scrutiny. A Porsche Approved extended warranty is a separate contract with its own servicing conditions, so check its terms before booking and we will advise on what it requires.

Where the hardware supports it, yes. PIWIS allows module coding and enabling of functions after retrofits, along with coding of replacement modules and handling of component protection. Tell us what you want to achieve and we will confirm whether it is possible on your model and year before you commit to anything.

Book Porsche Diagnostics

If your Porsche has a warning light, a fault message or a symptom you cannot pin down, book it in with us. At VWG Specialists we diagnose it on the same PIWIS platform Porsche Centres use, then fix it with genuine or OEM parts.
